It’s quite common for many of us to fall into a rut or become complacent with our regular workouts at the local fitness center/gym. Over time, we can start to experience burnout from repetitive exercises, day-in and day-out. Some even start to lose motivation or rush through their routines, simply to get them over with. These factors are ultimately counterproductive and can cause setbacks in our desired goals.
As an alternative to the mundane, many have turned to Krav Maga. This form of martial arts incorporates a myriad of other disciplines, including Kickboxing, Jujitsu, and Muay Thai (to name a few). It teaches how to use natural and intuitive movements or reflexes as a form of self-defense.
Fitness and Exercise Benefits of Krav Maga
Aside from the obvious benefits of learning hand-to-hand combat and weapons defenses, Krav Maga is also gaining momentum due to the physical fitness aspect of it. Classes begin with a quick warm-up, followed by a structured lesson plan, and end with an exhaustion drill.
When techniques are taught, students are instructed to repeat them slowly in order to develop the proper muscle memory, before picking up the intensity and speed. Once students display a proper understanding of the defenses, they go back and forth between partners, attacking/defending under pressure and stress.
Training Krav Maga not only aids in building muscles typically used in street fighting, but the workouts are high calorie burning, as well. Emphasis is placed on developing stamina and explosive strikes, which are key to self-defense. Both body and mind are challenged, especially when students begin role-playing as aggressors.
Other long term benefits include:
- Stress relief
- Quicker reflexes
- Increased confidence
- Improved situational awareness.
What Is Needed to Start Krav Maga Training?
Typical workout clothing that allows free movement (without being overly bulky) is ideal for training. Martial arts or running shoes are acceptable, but not mandatory. Many students and instructors actually prefer to train barefoot.
Krav Maga is for both men and women, regardless of previous training or fitness level. Here at Elite Martial Arts, our student base varies from those who have never trained in martial arts to competitive amateur fighters. We highly recommend registering for a free trial class to see if Krav Maga is right for you!
